War Game

War game “Romans and Africans”. A total of 250 gilt silver figures made for Frederik V. 109 of the figures were made as a supplement for a set of chessmen, made in Augsburg, c. 1700.
Rome versus Carthage was the classical conflict for many chess sets of the day.
War games, or rather strategic games, were an immensely important aspect of the upbringing of any prince in Europe. Despite its lack of gunpowder, cannons and muskets these games were intended to educate the princes in the basic outlines of strategic warfare.
