Satin sofa

The grey satin sofa with matching armchairs in the private salon of Queen Louise are unusual for their time. Before the 1870’s women wore dresses with large crinoline skirts and they could not move around in the rooms unless the furniture was placed by the walls. After the 1870’s dresses became smaller and the women could move around freely. It was possible to play with the placing of the furniture in the rooms. They had wheels under the legs so the Queen could sit in one place playing cards and then move the chair to another table to drink tea.
