Frederik IX smoked a great deal throughout his life, but in old age exchanged cigarettes for a pipe for the sake of his health.

Frederik IX is seldom seen in photographs without a cigarette or a pipe. In his lifetime there was still only limited awareness of the adverse effects of smoking, but the chain-smoking king had nevertheless to give up cigarettes at the beginning of the 1960s. It didn’t take him long to build up a large collection of pipes, which leave a distinctive mark on the study. Apart from the many visible examples the square table is also filled with pipes.
