Greek vases

The Greek vases show Christian VIII’s great interest for antiquity. On a journey to Italy in 1819 he met the former Archbishop of Tarent, Giuseppe Capece Latro (1744-1836). He immediately became interested in the Archbishop’s archeological collection and bought large parts of it in 1820. Subsequently, the Prince travelled abroad several times and bought mostly Greek and South Italian vases and coins. After his death, the collection was transferred to the National Museum, from where these vases are on loan.
