Women's Order

The Order of St Catharine was a Russian ladies' order, which was instituted in 1714 in honour of Catherine I of Russia. Both Queen Louise and Queen Alexandrine received this order.

1850-1875

The social and political revolts in Europe in 1848 had ushered in new times for European states, and for Denmark too. But even though the absolute monarchy was abolished with the Constitution of 1849, the monarchy was far from disengaged from power.

Frederik VII

Frederik VII was the King of Denmark from 1848; son of Christian VIII and Charlotte Frederikke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. He was married three times but had no heirs.

Order of Dannebrog, star

Star of the Order of Dannebrog, gold with brilliants and rubies. Made after amendments to the statutes of the Order in 1808, probably for Frederik VI.

Order of the Elephant

The Chain of the Order of the Elephant with Insignia, gold with enamel and table-cut stones. The Chain was possibly made in Copenhagen by the goldsmith Jean Henri de Moor after 1693; the elephant possibly by Paul Kurtz, 1671.

Order of Dannebrog

The Chain of the Order of Dannebrog with Insignia, gold with enamel and table-cut stones. The Order was established by Christian V in 1671. The Insignia was possibly made by Paul Kurtz in the same year.

Order of the Elephant, star

Star of the Order of the Elephant, brilliants and pearls on gold and enamel. Possibly made c. 1770 by J.F. Fistaine.

Order "de l'union parafite"

The Order “de l’union parfaite”, instituted in 1732 by Sophie Magdalene to commemorate her happy marriage. The first order in Denmark which could also be worn by women.
