Christian VIII, coronation

The coronation of Christian VIII. Drawing by I.V. Gertner. Christian VIII was the last coronated king in all of danish history, and the ceremony was performed 28th of july 1840. All coronations performed during absolutism were held in Frederiksborg Castle in the Castle Chapel. After the shift to parliamentarism it was, and still is, customary that a succeding monarch was proclaimed from the balcony of Christiansborg by the primeminister, after having announced the death of the previous monarch.
